Many Paths, One Destination: Building Your Queer Family

Within the LGBTQ+ community, the journey to building a family is often nuanced, varied, and deeply intentional. There is no single path to parenthood, and every way of building a family deserves love, care, and validation.

Recognizing the Diversity of Journeys

For many queer and trans parents, family building comes with added layers of complexity, from finding affirming providers to navigating culturally relevant mental health care. Here are some of the common, yet deeply personal, paths individuals and couples may take:

  • Assisted Reproduction: This includes fertility treatments such as IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) and IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), which may involve donor-assisted conception.

  • Donor-Assisted Conception: Navigating the use of donor sperm or eggs involves thoughtful consideration of the future, including how to talk to children about their origins and the possibility of donor siblings.

  • Adoption and Fostering: Many families grow through adoption and the foster care system.

  • Single Parenthood by Choice: Individuals may choose to embark on the parenting journey independently, navigating the challenges and joys of being a single parent by choice with a chosen support network.

The Importance of Affirming Care

Creating a supportive environment for queer family building starts with access to knowledge and providers who ensure you feel seen, respected, and understood. It is vital for birthworkers and mental health professionals to provide trauma-informed, gender-affirming care that recognizes the specific needs of LGBTQ+ families.

Whether you are the birthing partner or not, family planning, pregnancy and parenthood often increase necessary interactions with systems that perpetuate discrimination or have caused harm to you or loved ones in the past. This makes it that much more important for you to be connected with support that helps you build trust and feel safe.

Finding Your Community

Building community is one of the foremost things I recommend any client do when they are navigating family planning, pregnancy, parenthood, or any other stage of life.. Connection with others who share similar lived experiences is one of the most powerful ways to feel validated and supported. When there are so many different things going on in life, trying to build community can feel overwhelming, so here are some ideas and resources (link below).
